A non-profit supporting Ukrainian refuges in the Kootenays has received a large donation from shipping company Manitoulin Transport.
The company’s Sparwood terminal donated $10,000 to the Shelter for Ukrainians Society.
Society president Bonnie Spence-Vingi says the funds are used to help families who moved to the Kootenays to escape the war in their home country.
“When families arrive here, they have had to pay their own way here,” Spence-Vingi says. “Once they arrive, if they provide us with proof of transport, we are able to reimburse them for that. We also use the funds to help them with household items, school supplies, what ever they are in need of, clothing and so forth, to help them get started.”
Spence-Vingi says there’s no end to the war in sight as it approaches its one year anniversary.
“Because we see no end to this and our mission is to continue to support, we hope that the community will continue to be as generous as they have,” she says. “And to continue to reach out, to volunteer, to help out, to donate in any way they can.”
There are sixty-two Ukrainians living in the Kootenays who are being supported by the society.
