A familiar name in the Columbia Valley political scene is hoping to earn a seat with Invermere District Council in next month’s byelection.
Stephanie Stevens has served as an alternate director for nearby Regional District of East Kootenay Area G for several years, and recently ran for the director’s position versus Roberta Schnider.
“I was Gerry Wilkie’s alternate for Area G for about ten years, and this is actually my third election in four years,” says Stevens. “I ran against Gerry [Wilkie] and was not successful, and then Roberta [Schnider] and I ran against each other last October, right in the middle of that election I moved to Invermere.”
She says her priorities for Invermere, if she is elected, are to ensure community leaders are looking out for everyone from young families to seniors.
“I would like to see more of a focus to make sure that we have enough activities for seniors and for our youth, making sure we’re keeping an eye on what’s going on and really understanding what they need as well as families,” Stevens says.
Stevens adds housing and infrastructure upgrades are focal points this term for district council.
The byelection to fill the vacancy on Invermere District Council is happening March 4.
