The Regional District of East Kootenay has launched a survey to assess the impact of consolidating specific official community plans and zoning bylaws.
The RDEK is considering merging the Rockyview and Moyie & Area OCPs and the Wycliffe and Electoral Area C south zoning bylaws into one OCP and one bylaw each.
Affected areas would include Cranbrook South, Gold Creek, Moyie, Wycliffe and more.

A new planning process being launched by the RDEK is aiming to consolidate two existing Official Community Plans (OCP) and Zoning Bylaws into one OCP and one Zoning Bylaw.
“We have been looking for opportunities where we have neighbouring policy documents to streamline things by consolidating them to provide consistency, clarity, and better ease of use,” explains RDEK Planner Krista Gilbert. “At the same time, it gives us an opportunity to update the bylaws and work with the community to ensure the current policies are reflective of the community’s vision for how it wants to grow, develop or stay the same.”
The Rockyview OCP planning process is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete and is aiming to create one OCP and one Zoning Bylaw by consolidating the current Rockyview OCP with the Moyie & Area OCP and the existing Wycliffe Zoning Bylaw with the Electoral Area C South Zoning Bylaw to create one OCP and one Zoning Bylaw.
“Community engagement is at the heart of every successful planning project and this planning process covers a wide geographic area, so we are really encouraging residents to get involved and share their ideas and thoughts,” adds RDEK Board Chair Rob Gay.
To help foster that community engagement, the RDEK has launched a survey to gather initial feedback from the affected areas.
In addition, they are currently seeking applications from residents and property owners within the proposed plan area to sit on an Advisory Group to guide the process.
In May, the RDEK is planning to host a number of community engagement sessions and will be providing more details as they are confirmed.
The general areas included in the planning process are Cranbrook South, Gold Creek, Jim Smith and New Lakes, Silver Springs, Lumberton, Munroe Lake, Green Bay, Moyie, Wilks Kahn Subdivision, Spruceland Estates, Mission Road north of Cranbrook, and a portion of Wycliffe within Area C including Wycliffe Perry Creek Road.
