So long Sam Steel Days, say “hello” to Spirit of the Rockies.
After 57 years, Cranbrook’s annual early summer festival is changing its name to Spirit of the Rockies Festival – replacing the familiar Sam Steele Days moniker.
Spirit of the Rockies Festival Society board member Laura Kennedy says you can expect the same caliber of entertainment and activities as seen in past years.
“Lots of people don’t understand the history of Sam Steele and how the festival came about,” Kennedy says. “We looked at how we can be more encompassing for the entire community and looking at moving forward into the future with the festival. That’s how we came up with the name ‘Spirit of the Rockies Festival’.”
She says the Spirit of the Rockies brand will celebrate the entire region and people who help these communities thrive.
“It’s the spirit of our community that makes things happen and that’s what we’re trying to convey with the name change,” says Kennedy. “It’s the spirit of the community, it’s the spirit of its people and we just want to celebrate that moving forward.”
The first ever Spirit of the Rockies Festival is happening June 15-18.

Since 1966, Sam Steele Days has provided an opportunity for the people of Cranbrook and the Kootenays to come together and celebrate food, music, sports, entertainment, and most of all, our community spirit.
After 57 years, we are proud to announce our annual festival will now be known as Spirit of the Rockies Festival. Attendees can expect the same high calibre of entertainment and activities as in past years.
Without the ongoing commitment from volunteers and community partners, the festival would not exist. Moving forward, we are going to put new efforts and focus on bringing in new energy and volunteers to drive forward the Spirit of the Rockies Festival.
