Temporary overnight warming shelters remain available in Cranbrook and Fernie as the East Kootenay continues to experience unseasonably cool temperatures.
The Alliance Church in Cranbrook is available as an overnight warming centre Thursday night from 7:00 pm to 9:00 am Friday morning.
Meanwhile, the Cranbrook Public Library, Western Financial Place concourse and Kimberley Public Library are also available as options for those who need to escape the cold during daytime hours.
An overnight warming centre has also been added in Fernie, the Seniors Centre at 562 3rd Avenue will be open late afternoon on Thursday until 8:00 am Friday morning.
An extreme cold warning from Environment Canada remains active in the East Kootenay through Thursday.

Unseasonably cold temperatures and wind chill values will continue today.
Location: Elk Valley, East Kootenay, East Columbia, Yoho Park – Kootenay Park, North Columbia, Kinbasket, North & South Thompson, Shuswap, North & Central Okanagan, Fraser Canyon, Nicola and Similkameen.
Threat: Bitterly cold temperatures and wind chill values near or below minus 35.
Remarks: A very cold arctic air mass has settled over the region. Wind chill values at or below minus 35 will continue this morning. Temperatures will gradually rise this afternoon for most regions.
However, for Yoho Park – Kootenay Park, East Kootenay, and Elk Valley, cold temperatures and wind chill values will persist tonight.
Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.
Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.
If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.
Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
