Fernie residents have spoken, and the city has a new mayor.
Preliminary results show Nic Milligan has unseated Ange Qualizza as Fernie’s new mayor, Qualizza leaves City Hall with one term as mayor under her belt.
Milligan says he will do his best to ensure he gives Fernie residents a voice at City Hall.
“I hope that I can live up to their [residents’] expectations,” says Milligan. “I’m going to work very hard, very humbling to see those [election results] numbers and don’t want to disappoint the residents of Fernie.”
He says there are several important issues for the new city council to address through its upcoming four-year term.
“As many communities around the province do, we have some major priorities including child care and housing,” Milligan says. “We also have some infrastructure challenges here in Fernie that we need to focus on.”
Civicinfobc.ca reports Milligan received 1,701 votes (68.5%) compared to Ange Qualizza’s 776 votes (31.2%), 2,485 votes were counted through Saturday’s election and advanced polls out of the estimated 4,552 eligible voters in Fernie/
Preliminary results show Harsh Ramadass and Ted Shoesmith joining city council for their first term, while Troy Nixon, Kevin McIsaac and Kyle Hamilton return to the council table.
The new mayor and city council will be officially sworn in at the next Fernie City Council meeting on November 1.
