The City of Cranbrook is working to make use of the land surrounding the Canadian Rockies International Airport.
City council has approved a protocol agreement between the City and ?aqam Community Enterprises LP for the development of the airport and industrial lands.
Mayor Lee Pratt says the City and ?aqam Enterprises both have land parcels near the airport, the agreement will allow them to develop it together.
“We’ve decided we’re going to work together, because we’re actively trying to find investors to invest there and develop it and with that we’ve found some people that would also be interested in dealing with [the ?aqam] on their land,” says Pratt. “So, we’re just going to sign an agreement that we’ll work together on it and hopefully we can get some things happening out there.”
He says the plans for the land will remain confidential for now.
“We are working on a number of projects but we can’t say anything on it,” he says. “It’ll be definitely helping the airport but it’s definitely for the whole East Kootenays. I mean we all use that airport, so if we can develop services around it that’s going to be good for the whole area.”
