Volunteerism in the East Kootenay was proudly displayed at an award ceremony Tuesday.
A total of 25 people were recognized with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee medal at the Royal Alexandra Hall yesterday by Kootenay-Columbia MP Rob Morrison.
Some of the recipients included Cranbrook’s Karin Penner, Chris Goodwin and teacher Adam Stewart.
“Well being a teacher, we do a lot of stuff with some of the kids, whether it be sports or extracurricular type things” Stewart says. “You get to know the families really, really well, so when you see them out and about in the community and going to events, its great to make those connections.”
Cindy Postnikoff with Military Ames was also recognized at the event.
“This is such an honour. Obviously, somebody nominated me and its a real honour to know that people in the community have confidence in me,” Postnikoff says.
Postnikoff says the honour was double for her, as her son Kyle Dalum was also recognized with a medal.
The awards mark the 70th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. She is Canada’s longest reigning monarch and the first to celebrate a platinum jubilee.
Outstanding volunteers, members of the Canadian Armed Forces and emergency services, and other people who have made a positive impact on society were deemed eligible to receive the medals.
