The Rotary Club of Cranbrook and JCI Kootenay are breaking ground on their latest project this month.
The non-profits are holding a work party August 20th as they kick off the construction of a new perimeter trail around Moir Park.
Geotechnical consultant Marcus Brown says volunteers will be working for roughly 8 hours, with refreshments provided for their hard work.
“Volunteers will be there with bobcats and other small machinery there to help clear the sites,” says Brown.” Other volunteers will have rakes and other things to help move gravel around, make sure the base is looking good for pavement at a later date.”
Brown says they are working to build a trail circling the baseball diamonds and soccer fields, with lookouts for you to view the scenery.
“With connections to the existing parts of the infrastructure of the park there,” he says. “People will be able to take a nice long walk around the park, access the other facilities, such as the bathroom, the soccer fields, the baseball fields, and the JCI Playground.”
Construction begins August 20th, work is expected to be complete late September/early October.

Celebrating 100 years in Cranbrook, Rotary Club of Cranbrook in partnership with JCI Kootenay with major sponsorship provided by McElhanney, the City of Cranbrook, BA Blacktop and Emco Waterworks are proud to continue their commitment to Cranbrook’s Active Transportation network with Phase 1 of the Moir Park Perimeter Trail.
This phase will consist of a paved trail encircling the baseball diamonds and part of the soccer fields offering connections to the other amenities in the park.
Lookouts will also be constructed that will give users of the trail majestic views of the city, the Rocky Mountains and Mt. Baker and Cranbrook Mountain, perfect for your next Instagram post.
Future phases will see the trail continued around the perimeter of the park and connect to the Rotary Trail and City of Cranbrook cycling networks.
Construction of the trail will kick off with a work party on Saturday August 20, 2022 at 9am.
With the help of local residents, members of Rotary Club of Cranbrook and JCI Kootenay, and KEYSA volunteers, sod will be stripped, and gravel will be placed and spread in preparation for paving a later date.
Food and beverages prepared by Jim Cupido of Columbo Lodge will be provided to volunteers.
If you have a bobcat or small excavator or know how to run a rake, your help would be most appreciated, and you can contact Joe McGowan at 250-919-2494 or joe.a.mcgowan@gmail.com to throw your name in the ring.
Grand opening of the trail is set for late September/Early October pending paving of the trail by BA Blacktop.
