The Regional District of East Kootenay board will be losing a large chunk of experience following October’s municipal election.
Area A director Mike Sosnowski is retiring at the end of this term, he has served as the RDEK director for Area A since 2005.
He looks forward to taking some time to relax after a 17 year career as an RDEK director.
“The commitment of being a [regional district] director, you’re on 24/7, you can’t really go anywhere and that is your first life,” Sosnowski says. “I’m going to retire and just take it easy, and live my life.”
Sosnowski says there is a lot to be proud of through his time as an RDEK director, particularly with regards to helping secure a larger chunk of the RDEK’s mine tax sharing agreement – those extra funds helped with vital equipment upgrades, including new trucks for the fire department.
He also points to securing a funding source for local non profit Angel Flight East Kootenay as a major success.
Sosnowski advises his successor to ensure they do their best to represent the people of Area A and to act as an advocate for their needs.
“I think a director needs to be dedicated, has perseverance and do what the people of the area need and want,” explains Sosnowski. “Keep government out of the face of the people instead of nitpicking them.”
The municipal election is happening October 15.
