A celebration of life is being held in Invermere Tuesday, July 5 to remember former fire chief Roger Ekman.
Ekman passed away in May, He was Invermere’s Fire Rescue chief for 36 years before retiring in 2018.
Deputy Chief Colin Matheson says the celebration is open to the public.
“It’s just the time for everyone, friends and families to come in and share stories of Roger and his impact to the community to everybody,” says Matheson. “He had a big impact on Invermere and we just want to remember him.”
Matheson says one of Ekman’s largest impacts in his 36 years as chief, was the renovation of the service’s current fire hall.
“He led a group a volunteers, refurbishing a basically derelict building into what we have today,” Matheson says. “He really was one that fought for making sure that the Fire Department and the firefighters had everything they needed. He was doing it without making a huge burden on the taxpayers.”
