A local musician is thanking her supporters for helping her reach a top spot in a nation-wide search for new musicians in Canada.
Heather Gemmel was voted into one of the three spots for the Toyota Searchlight competition’s top 100 finalists.
Gemmel credits her support to feelings of connection in her song ‘Northstar Burning’, about the fire that destroyed the Northstar Quad Chairlift at Kimberley Alpine Resort in December.
“I play all my own instruments, I’m self produced, I don’t have a record label, I’m a one woman band when I’m on stage live,” Gemmel says. “But this whole album is self produced and I did it all myself. I’m hoping that’s one of the reasons why people helped me out with this. But, above all it was because I think people connected with the song, that’ s why I chose the song.”
She’s asking her supporters to follow her on social media to show the judges she has the potential to be a star.
“You guys made this happen,” she says. “Like I said, I wasn’t picked by the judges, I was picked by you. I can’t thank you enough for all the help along the way. This is just another good example of how social media can be used for good and not evil, so thank you.”
Gemmel has received a promotion package to distribute her music country-wide for winning the fan choice award.
