BC’s Lieutenant Governor’s tour of the Kootenay region is underway this week.
The tour marks Janet Austin’s first official visit to the region since being sworn in as Lieutenant Governor.
Janet Austin has plans to visiting several Kootenay communities, with stops scheduled in Cranbrook, Creston, Nelson and Castlegar.
Austin is also visiting the ?aqamnik School while in the region.
“We have a group of Grade 3 and 4 students who I’m going to spend time with and we’ll have a tour of the new school, the gymnasium and also the local church as well,” Austin says. “Its been two years since we’ve able to undertake a community tour and this is my first community tour.”
Austin cited her praise for St Marys band chief Sophie Pierre as one of her reasons for coming to the Kootenay region.
“It was my first choice for a location to visit for a number of reasons,” Austin says. “One of which is my great respect for Chief Sophie Pierre and the work that she’s done here and the fact that Indigenous History Month kicks off today. Its a wonderful region to celebrate from that point of view.”
Indigenous History Month is a time to honour the history, heritage and diversity of Indigenous peoples in Canada and recognize the strength of present-day Indigenous communities.
Austin is also hosting a lunch for recipients of the inaugural British Columbia Reconciliation Awards during her tour of the region.
