A City of Cranbrook employee is in the Toyota Searchlight competition, a national search for up and coming musicians.
Arborist horticulturist Heather Gemmell has entered into the Toyota Searchlight competition with her song Northstar Burning, about the fire that destroyed the Northstar Quad Chairlift at Kimberley Alpine Resort in December.
Gemmell entered the competition to gain more attention for her community and to promote herself prior to the release of her upcoming self-titled album.
“I’m really banking on the People’s Choice Award,” Gemmell says. “I got a really good group of followers here in Cranbrook and Kimberley. I really got a lot of support for the song I put forward a couple of months ago when I wrote it. I thought I would pitch it to the Searchlight contest, and that’ what I did.”
She is hopeful for support from the community, and she hopes to give back if she wins.
“Put on a music festival here in Kimberley and call it Kimber Billy,” Gemmell says. “Just really try to give back to my community because it’s not a song to celebrate, it’s a sad song and I don’t want to benefit from it other then with this contest.”
