The Mayor of Kimberley is reacting to the community’s data from the 2021 Canadian Census.
Data shows Kimberley’s population has grown 9.3% since 2016.
Mayor Don McCormick says Kimberley’s population growth is consistent with the last two Census reports in 2016 and 2011.
“For 15 years now we’ve been growing at a rate of about 1 1/2% – 2% a year,” McCormick says. “That’s adding about 150 to 200 people to the community each year. I’m really pleased that we are seeing consistent growth. We’re not seeing any wild swings one way or another.”
McCormick says the only concerning part of the 2021 Census data is how the city is growing year-over-year, he says housing supply is not keeping up with demand.
“Our population has grown by almost 10%, but the actual number of permanent private dwellings has only grown by less then 1%,” he says. “I think anybody looking for a place to live in Kimberley understands that we’re pretty tight and the Census has really just confirmed that.”
Kimberley’s population is 8,115 as of 2021, this exceeds the community’s population levels during the 1960s mining boom when roughly 7,700 people lived in the city.
