
Statistics Canada has released their latest census data, with nearly all East Kootenay communities reporting population increases.
Cranbrook’s population saw an increase of 2.3 percent, growing to 20,449 people.
Population levels decreased by 3.8 percent in Area C, the area surrounding Cranbrook from Fort Steele to Yahk.
The next largest city in the East Kootenay, Kimberley, reported a 9.3 percent population increase.
Its population has now topped eight thousand people, reaching a total of 8,115.
The biggest population increase percentage wise was in Radium Hot Springs, with a massive 72.6 percent population increase from 776 people to 1,339.
Canal Flats also saw a significant percentage change with a 20.1 percent increase. Its population is now at 802 people.
Going by the actual number of people, Fernie saw the biggest change with 924 new people moving in over the last five years, amounting to a 17.1 percent population increase and 6,320 total people.
Across the entire Kootenay-Columbia region, the population reached 120,759 people, an increase of 7.5 percent.
