Amplify East Kootenay, powered by Casino of the Rockies, is showcasing local businesses.
Today, we look at First Perk Coffee and Collectibles in Jaffray.
Why have our listeners nominated this business? – “This little bistro is the center of the community. Sean and his staff are so friendly. Sean contributes time and coffee to all our fundraisers and events.”
How do listeners feel this business has amplified the community? – “First Perk sits at the center of the community. Its a meeting place for people you haven’t seen in quite some time. The different coffee is always an adventure to try. Everyone goes there to sit and enjoy company and coffee.”
Jaffray’s First Perk Coffeehouse and Collectibles is a new twist on the Coffeehouse and Eatery that has been serving the community for nearly 20 years.
Owner and operator Shaun Damstrom says they opened their doors on June 5th, 2003, serving as a restaurant to the community.
Then COVID-19 happened, forcing Damstrom and his family to change their business model in 2020.
“We changed our model to more of a grab-and-go model, which really worked well with the times and helped us out with the way we could go forward and keep things going,” Damstrom says. “After that, we’ve been going strong here and enjoying the building and the people that we still get coming back.”
Damstrom says the decision to change their business wasn’t an easy one.
He and his family took some time off for the summer of 2020 to re-think their business, changing to a current grab and go model in the Fall.
Damstrom adds the change has increased their variety and given them more to offer their customers.
“We have lots of local artisans and great gifts for people to choose from.” Damstrom says.
Damstrom adds they also work closely with their coffee roaster Cuppers to ensure their coffee stays fresh and ideas stay competitive.
He says the change has allowed them to be more creative with their menu as well, changing it up daily or weekly to meet the needs of regular customers.
You can find First Perk Coffee and Collectibles at 1891 Aspen Drive in Jaffray.
