Cranbrook RCMP Is encouraging residents to follow a 9:00 pm routine.
The routine asks that residents remove any valuables from their vehicles and have their homes secured with doors and garages locked by 9:00 pm.
The detachment encourages you to set a remind on your phone to help make the routine a habit.
Constable Katie Forgeron says taking these actions make you less of an easy target for thieves.
“We have to lock our stuff up, we have to put stuff away,” Forgeron says. “It’s just kind of a reminder, people set an alarm in their phones for 9 O’clock every night, they’ll be like OK I have to go do this. It’s kind of a help to us obviously in order to keep people from stealing your stuff as well.”
She says the detachment will be working with the City to help residents remember the routine.
“We’ll keep putting out reminders to adopt the 9PM routine,” she says. “It’s to help us help you. Obviously we need people to help us solve crime, we need people to help us deter crime. We’re just asking people to adopt the 9 PM routine.”

The Cranbrook RCMP Detachment is launching a 9:00 PM routine for residents in Cranbrook.
The new initiative is designed to act as a reminder for you to remove valuables from your vehicles, lock your vehicle doors, lock the doors to your homes, garages, and sheds, turn on exterior lights and activate all alarms and security systems.
Setting a nightly reminder on your smartphones or other devices will help remind you to follow the 9:00 PM routine.
In a short period, this will become a positive new habit and help ensure a safer, more secure community for everyone.
“Thieves generally look for easy targets. Many vehicle burglaries, and to a lesser degree, stolen vehicles, occur because of vehicles being left unlocked,” says Cst. Katie Forgeron with the Cranbrook RCMP. “Thieves walk through neighborhoods, trying vehicle door handles, hoping to find an unlocked vehicle. The best way to prevent vehicle burglaries is to remove all your valuables, lock your vehicle’s doors upon exiting and take the keys to the vehicle inside your residence.”
This is an important habit to get into especially as we head into the holiday season, and we get busy with holiday shopping.
Keeping valuables safely hidden, leaving any purchases or gifts locked in the trunk and ensuring your vehicle is locked when you leave are important to remember.
