The Town of Creston is requiring all staff and volunteers who work at Town Hall to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Mayor Ron Toyota says the decision came after discussion at Tuesday’s town council meeting, and the policy has been extended to include town councillors.
“We had a discussion and we made a decision and we passed the resolution,” says Toyota. “In fact, we even amended it to include councillors, which is an area that we have no authority to do that, but all councillors present felt very strongly that we need to support the message.”
The Town says double vaccination rates in the area are around 65%, significantly less than the provincial average of 82%.
Employees who are not fully vaccinated by December 4 will be placed on unpaid leave for 90 days and may return when they become immunized.
The policy will also include volunteer firefighters and fire halls in the region.
“They [firefighters] all work out of our training centre and our fire hall with all the equipment and we canvased them,” Toyota says. “The majority, about 97 percent says ‘yes, we agree’, but unfortunately there’s a few that are not comfortable, they’re not pleased.”
