Kootenay-Columbia Green Party candidate Rana Nelson is disappointed with local and national results for her party.
Results from the 2021 Federal Election show Nelson secured 2,407 votes or less than four percent of the popular vote in the local polls.
Nelson is disappointed that Green leader Annamie Paul was not able to win in her riding, but is praising the two Green representatives who have been voted into Ottawa.
“We always have known that there will be a leadership review shortly and so we’ll just see where we go from there,” Nelson says. “I’m so glad that Mike Morris has got in in Kitchener-Centre and its the second time. I’ve been reading some wonderful things about him, so that’s great for Ontario.”
For Nelson, a Revelstoke resident, this was her first attempt at running in a federal election.
She feels there’s a need to change how candidates are elected to build a more diverse government.
“I learned recently that its been 100 years since studies have come out saying ‘First Past the Post’ isn’t what we need. Talk about studies sitting on a shelf,” Nelson says. “So that’s going to be my focus after this is to really work towards pro-rep.”
Nelson is thankful for her experience running in the federal election and plans to advocate for proportional representation to restructure Canada’s election system.
