Creston Fire Rescue wants to bring a Vancouver-based camp for women to the Kootenays.
Camp Ignite works to educate young women from grades 11 and 12 on non-traditional trades and careers, particularly in fire fighting .
After serving as a mentor for the Camp this summer, Creston Assistant Fire Chief Laura Dodman wants to bring a similar camp to the Kootenays for women who are unable to travel to Vancouver.
“Usually the camp is about 4 days there,” Dodman says. “And being 2 days, there was only like maybe a handful of girls, out of the 30 girls that were there from outside the lower mainland.”
She says women only make up 4% of firefighters in Canada and this would be a great way to inspire young women into considering joining.
“We’re trying to open the doors for girls to think of firefighting as a career for themselves where they typically wouldn’t” she says. “I think Grade 11/12 they’re ambitions are quite high. We want to mentor them right through.”
